I am going to start today’s post of with a bit of a rant – hopefully you’re alright with that.
My frustration today is all about the way that so many networkers are choosing to market their businesses online. I look at Google ads, on blogs, and on all the social media sites, and it is crazy to me just how many people are throwing their products and opportunity in the face of everyone who visits their site/blog/profile etc…
Before I go any further, let me say this – I respect any home-based business owner who sees the potential in the internet and is making the effort to move their business online. Anybody thinking this way is absolutely on the right track. What’s unfortunate, is that so many people are wasting tons and tons of their time online by attempting to drive traffic to their replicated company site.
You see, the internet today has become a million conversations at a MASSIVE PARTY. I want you to get this – the internet is comprised of millions and millions of focused conversations inside a HUGE party with Billions of attendees.
Web 2.0 is all about allowing people to interact with other like-minded people, and it is awesome!
When setting up your marketing funnel online, you want to think about initiating and participating in meaningful conversations and creating genuine relationships with the people visiting your various sites, blogs and profiles.
With this in mind, I want you to imagine yourself at a party. You’re in a room with 100 people and you see a group of 5 people engaging in a conversation at the back of the room by the punch bowl. You look at the group and decide that it looks like a fun conversation to join, so you walk on over.
The group sees you coming, they all smile and as you join the circle, they begin to introduce themselves. You tell them your name and once that’s out of the way you decide to contribute to the conversation: “If any of you need to lose 50 lbs. in 50 days AND become a millionaire at the same time, check out MY site: [insert ‘x’ company website here]!”
What do you imagine the reaction of the group would be? Keeping in mind this is the very first time you’ve met these people, do you think they’d be excited to go check out your site?
No!
And you know what is so insane about this? This is EXACTLY what so many people are doing online in a desperate effort to grow their business. In fact, I took this line almost verbatim off of someone’s Twitter post.
am going to repeat this one more time – you need to think about the internet as a MASSIVE party with literally MILLIONS of simultaneous conversations about MILLIONS of topics.
So when you are drawn to a conversation and decide you’d like to contribute to it, what exactly do you need to do?
I’ll make this as simple as possible.
1. Introduce yourself and allow people to get to know you by being open, authentic, and transparent
2. Take Genuine interest in the people you are meeting.
3. Contribute REAL value to the conversation/community by adding relevant information on the topic being discussed.
THIS, in essence is what the You Inc. business model is all about. People only do business with people they know, like and trust. With the You Inc. business model your goal is position yourself as trusted source of value in a given community.
If your goal is to successfully grow your business online, it is essential that you get this.
In later posts, I will get more specific and provide you with specific examples and strategies I use to add value to any given conversation about any topic, in any online community.
Have a terrific day!
Dave
