“A Tribe is a group of people, large or small, who are connected to one another, a leader, and an idea.” ~Seth Godin
A simple idea, with infinite power.
As leaders in the Network Marketing Industry, our objective is to build a ‘Tribe’ or Network of people through a shared idea or belief. Easy! Right? It can seem easy enough, but then why is it so many Networkers out there are struggling to grow their businesses? Why is the failure rate in the Home-Based Business Industry over 95%?
I encourage you to watch Seth Godin’s TED Talk I’ve embedded below. I’ve watched this video 3 times this week, and just last night, in my 3rd time through the video, I finally got it!
Something occurred to me about our industry – about why so many people are having such a hard time getting into real momentum with their businesses.
In this video, Seth talks about 3 Movements of Change. Now, I realize that most of you will not take the time to watch this entire video, and that is absolutely fine. Obviously, I’d encourage you to invest 17:23 of your time and watch it, but if you only have 5 minutes right now, you need to start the video at 3:54 and watch through to 9:06.
Ready, Set, Play.
Alright, so now that you’ve seen it, I’ll share with you the moment of clarity that I had during my 3rd time through the video.
Here it is:
The reason that so many networkers are struggling in their businesses, is because they are operating with a TV-Type Mentality in a Tribe-Centric Industry.
In other words, they are focused on advertising and selling (or pushing) their business and products to anyone and everyone within arms reach. Instead, the real focus should be placed on creating a space (or multiple spaces) that allows for people who are passionate about an idea to connect, and to grow freely, along with their cause.
If you feel like you are spending a lot of your time and energy advertising and selling your products and business, then you are likely stuck in a TV-Type Mindset. Unfortunately this type of approach will only work for BIG corporations with lots and LOTS of Brand Power and Money such as McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Johnson & Johnson, and yes … Wal-Mart.
If this is you (and I know we’ve ALL been there), then perhaps you might consider shifting into a Tribe-Centric Approach.
One of the simplest ways that you can start to implement this approach today, is to create or join what’s widely become known as a Blogging Alliance. A Blogging Alliance is a group (tribe) of people connected by the idea that blogging is a critical first step in developing your personal brand online.
The side benefit to a Tribe of this nature, is that you can help each other to get noticed by syndicating each other’s content. Not to mention the fact that through openly sharing information with one another, you will all continuously be learning and increasing your value.
Check out some of the Superstars in my Blogging Alliance, check out their sites, and consider forming your own or finding a powerful Tribe to plug in to.
I hope that your week is filled with friends, fun, wellness and passion.
Sincerely,
Dave
P.S. I’d love to hear your thoughts on today’s post, so please feel free to share them, but here’s my thought: when you leave a comment today, give a shout out to any blogging superstar who you think is ‘doing it right’. Share a link to their blog and a short testimonial for them.
P.P.S. And of course, if you feel in alignment with the message, be sure to Retweet it to your Twitter followers.
‘Leaders commit to the cause, they commit to the Tribe, they commit to the people who are there.’ ~Seth Godin

This is a really awesome post, Dave! I think I said this before, but i love your writing style.
I’m going to have to give a shout out to my blogging sister Kimberly http://www.kimberly-castleberry.com/ ~ not only is she providing extremely valuable content that allows us less-than tech savvy entrepreneurs out here to navigate social media with greater efficiency and ease, but she also is the goddess of syndication! Definitely a woman to keep an eye on!

I heard something this past weekend at a training event and that was that Seth Godin was not a fan of Network Marketing. Of course that was about 5 years ago. Apparently, someone showed him the light. The concept of Tribe Syndication and forming Blogging Alliances is the next big wave to come our way. It looks like you have positioned yourself at just the right place and at just the right time.
Thanks for the great post.

Hey Dave! Another great post. I love how you describe it as a TV-Type Mindset. You are right that this has become a Tribe-Centric Industry. It is amazing what you can accomplish when you team up with other people who are rocking on the internet.
I love what Jean Nash has been doing with her blog. She has been creating a lot of posts to help people who are just getting started. http://jeannash.com
