Conan

Alright, I don’t want to start any rumours.

Conan O’Brien (as far as I know) is not looking to start a Home Business. The guy was just handed 40 Million Dollars to stay at home for 7 months. Crazy, right?

(if you’re not caught up on the story I’m referring to, you’ll want to do that before you read on)

But what would happen if he did? How would Conan O’Brien fare in the wild and wacky world of Network Marketing?

Perhaps the answer is obvious. Hypothetically, if Conan O’Brien was to write an email to his millions of followers tomorrow stating that he’s retired from the TV industry and has decided to work from home through affiliation with ‘XYZ’ Network Marketing Company, I suspect that a percentage of his Tribe would click-thru a link or two, and enter their credit card information, either to try the product he was promoting, or  to become a part of his downline.

Wouldn’t that be wild? I love Conan, and I’d be all over it!

Without getting too carried, I think there are some things we can all take away.

Now, here’s the thing – I am not Conan O’Brien, and most likely neither are you.

(Conan – if you do happen to read this, I’ve got a GREAT spot for you in my downline!!!)

But  in all seriousness, I’m not Oprah Winfrey, President Obama, Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky, Derek Jeter or Brad Pitt.

Here are a couple of questions I’m going to throw out there. Maybe you can help me to answer them … Of course, I will offer my own thoughts before I pass the buck:

1) How do these Mega-Stars create these powerful groups of incredibly loyal and passionate followers?

and …

2) Without our own TV show on NBC, or playing shortstop for the Yankees, how can we as ‘Average Joe Entrepreneurs’ develop a similar type of following? (perhaps with a slightly smaller group of people)

Let’s get back to Conan for a second. What steps has he taken to build a strong personal brand?

1) He found his vehicle

2) He developed original and unique content

3) He began to consistently deliver the content in his own voice, through his own person style

4) The combination of regular content, and an authentic personality, attracted a core group of fans

5) He continued to develop a relationship with his ‘list‘ through regular communication and a continuous stream of valuable content

6) In doing this over a period of time, he became likeable and trustworthy in the eyes of his followers

Isn’t this the name of the game? Here’s the thing – we don’t need MILLIONS of fans and followers. In fact, we don’t (necessarily) need thousands … though it can’t hurt. Conan has now left NBC. Rumour has it that he may at some point sign a contract with FOX. Do you think he’ll still have a successful show? I do.

The key is to get started, to find your vehicle (a blog, for starters), and to begin getting compensated based on your passion.

This message is critical for the thousands and thousands of network marketers out there, who have yet to begin the development of their own personal brands. Of course, it’s CRUCIAL to partner with the right company – one with killer consumable products, a fair (and generous) compensation plan, leaders with a proven track record, progressive training, and a mission and vision that you can align yourself with.

However, regardless of the company you’re with, the best thing you can do for your business long term, is to begin to develop a brand centred around YOU. I realize that for many of you, this is an intimidating concept. Maybe you don’t understand (yet) how investing in your brand will ultimately grow your network marketing business …

That’s okay.

If that’s you, I’ve added two new tools to my ‘Recommended Resources‘ page (#6 and #7) to help get you over this road block when you’re ready.

Finally, I wanted to share Conan’s farewell message. Watch as he displays genuine gratitude towards his employer of 20 years (NBC), and shares some very honest and real advice with his fans.

Notice the authenticity. Conan has built his brand simply by being himself. This is what makes him attractive and why people will continue to be loyal to his brand.

What a class act!

Well that’s about it from me … for today. There is a lot more that could (and will) be said about this topic, and despite the fact that personal branding is alive and kicking in our industry, there are THOUSANDS more who still need to hear this message. Don’t believe me? Head over to Twitter and count the number of tweets that lead you directly to replicated company websites.

Have an incredible week!

Cheers to Conan O’Brien, and Cheers to you!

Dave

Dave,

Love the lessons that can be learned here regarding personal branding.

I have always said from the beginning that people join people, they don’t join companies.

That is why it is so important to let what you know and what you can offer be put on the table first and foremost and what the company can offer is a close second…..

Cheers

Dave,

Wow, what a great job here! You’ve dazzled us with an intriguing title and tied a popular story into an educational post – kudos to you!

I love your message here, we can all be “rock stars” whether or not we ever become famous. It’s about building trust with others, being our authentic selves, and over delivering.

You obviously know exactly where you’re going and how to get there.

Dave,
What a great analogy. Of course I’d jump on board to his Biz Opp :-) You really illustrate the importance of what we are learning and what we are doing by relating it to someone that has a huge name.

I enjoyed your post. It shed great information in a fun and enlightening way.

This man was totally authentic in this moment. I am not a fan of late night tv but have been keeping tabs as all good pop cultures fans do. He acted of his own accord – with honour and integrity. Definitely the makings a great network marketer.
I have reposted this blog to Twitter – everyone should repost to their networks. Let’s see if we can get Conan’s attention – maybe he will be curious…
